Tall Ships Halifax 2017

They are here!
The downtown core of the city was literally busting at its seams this weekend with the arrival of the Tall Ships. So many sails......

This is the Spanish ship Le Galeon whose home port is in Texas. It was difficult not to have images of Johnny Depp spring to mind!

Our Canadian Naval vessel, HMCS Oriole, sailed the farthest to arrive here coming all the way from Esquimalt, BC, through the Panama Canal and up to Halifax - a distance of over 7500 nautical miles!

The Spirit of Bermuda..., and its attentive array of rotatable vents

This is the Lawrence II from Mum's city - Kingston, Ontario

Members of the 78th Highlanders were dressed in period regalia for the opening ceremony. Luckily it was scheduled fairly early in the day, as it must be quite unbearable to wear all this wool in the heat of the afternoon!

I forget which ship this was, but I was surprised to see a saddle on the boom. (I'm not sure of the proper term). Perhaps the sailor that draws the short stick has to sit astride this marine version of a bucking bronco in foul weather?? Another source claims it is to aid in steering the vessel. (Clarification is pending.)

I worked on the shuttle double decker bus ferrying passengers to and fro all day on Sunday, before meeting up with dear friends from Vancouver. We sat at Murphy's and enjoyed a bite with a 270 degree view of all the curious smaller ships bustling about in the harbour - a truly magnificent sight. I hope to get down to the Parade of Sails tomorrow at noon for the grand departure, unless I'm scheduled on the Hop On Hop Off bus again.
In any event, it's been an amazing experience!!!!
